Introduction

Hello! My Name is Ian, I am currently a Secondary 2 Scout from Southern Cross Scout Unit in St Gabriel's Secondary School. My hobbies include cycling and watching movies. I started my scouting  journey back in primary school and was enthusiastic to continue scouting in secondary school. I decided to continue my journey as a scout as I knew that i would be able to acquire the essential skills of Pioneering , Exploration , Backwoodsman and First Aid as it could not be gained elsewhere except in Scouts. I  started this blog to document my journey on attaining the Chief Commissioner's Award and I hope you'll follow me on this Scouting Journey! Ian Foong

East Area Founder's Day Campfire 2023

The East Area Founder's Campfire was a large scale campfire with an estimated number of 500 scouts attending held at Dunman High School. The guest of honour for the event was East Area Commissioner, Goh YiHeng.  It was the first large scale East Area campfire for the first time in 3 years, I was given the opportunity to be part of the campfire by being a song leader and lead by singing the songs when they were being played . t Troop Picture                                                                Rehearsal for 'BP Spirit' Song  For every scout campfire, there will always be song leaders who will lead the crowd in singing the songs, around 15 scouts from St Gabriel's and Dunman High volunteered to lead in these songs and I was one of them. Mentorship

At the start of Secondary 3, I was chosen to be mentored by PL Ryan (now venture) as part of his Chief Commissioner’s Award. Initially, I was surprised why he would even choose me to be his mentee as we were not even in the same patrol, but it was because he was curious to know more about his juniors. My friendship with Ryan drew closer as I took over his position as the Chairperson of the 2006 Southern Cross Scout Troop. When I was unsure on certain tasks that I had to fulfil as the chairperson , Ryan would not hesitate to help me out, he would even go the extra mile to give me tips on how to improve the task which allowed me to lead activities for the troop easi er.  Ryan's leadership skills are unparalleled. He is patient, kind, and always willing to go the extra mile to help us learn and grow. His enthusiasm for scouting is infectious, and he has a remarkable ability to motivate and inspire us to be our best. What I appreciate most about Ryan is his willingness to lead b...

Founder's Day 2023

Every year on 22 February, Scouts from all around the globe commemorate Founder's Day. Founder's Day is an important date on the scouting calendar as it is the birth date of Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the world-wide scouting movement.  As for this year's Founder's Day , we were able to hold it in the Parade Square with the whole school witnessing the parade for the first time in 3 years. The event was planned by the Venture Exco alongside with the other S4 scouts. Troop Picture The purpose of commemorating scouts founder's day each year is to reaffirm our oaths together as one and contemplate how scouting's century-old values are still relevant in today's fast-paced world.  Ventures of the 07' batch Moment of Silence                                                             Rehearsal for Founder's Day 2023  Over...

Pioneering Project

Planning out a pioneering project was one of the activities that we had to complete as part of our Venture Training Programme. After much planning and consideration amongst the Venture Exco and S4 scouts, we decided to build a bridge, similar concept to the ones in playgrounds.                                                           07' Batch Ventures hard at work                                                AGSL Koh Shiew Cher inspecting the pioneering project  Overall, this pioneering project was very memorable to me as it was my first time planning and coordinating a pioneering project with my batch mates. If given the opportunity to lead in similar activities again, I would definitely do it again.     ...

One Pressing Issue the World faces

One pressing issue that the world faces today is climate change. Climate change refers to the long-term changes in temperature, precipitation patterns, and other weather-related phenomena that are occurring as a result of human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. Climate change poses significant risks to the environment, human health, and the global economy. It has already led to rising sea levels, more frequent and severe natural disasters, and changes in plant and animal populations. Climate change also contributes to air pollution, water scarcity, and food insecurity, particularly in vulnerable communities. Addressing climate change requires collective action at the global, national, and local levels. This includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions through transitioning to renewable energy sources, promoting energy efficiency, and investing in green technologies. It also involves protecting and restoring natural ecosystems, promoting sustainable l...

2023 DJC Launch

The 2023 Diamond Jubilee Challenge was launched on 14 January 2023 and the Guest of honour was Minister Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment of Singapore. This years's DJC theme was the Environment and the aim of this year's challenge is to help scouts learn more about the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and how they can be change makers starting from their community. East Area Scouts Scouts from all 4 districts were split into 8 groups, I was in group 8, having Rover Jia En as our group's facilitator. My group's focus topic was the effects of climate change and how it affects Singapore as well as what are the possible steps we can take to do as individuals. We had a group discussion and broke down the topic into 3 parts, rising sea levels, reducing carbon emissions and food security. After breaking down the topic, we discussed one the possible actions that we can do as individuals to tackle this issue. For example, we can reduce c...
