Mentorship

At the start of Secondary 3, I was chosen to be mentored by PL Ryan (now venture) as part of his Chief Commissioner’s Award. Initially, I was surprised why he would even choose me to be his mentee as we were not even in the same patrol, but it was because he was curious to know more about his juniors. My friendship with Ryan drew closer as I took over his position as the Chairperson of the 2006 Southern Cross Scout Troop. When I was unsure on certain tasks that I had to fulfil as the chairperson , Ryan would not hesitate to help me out, he would even go the extra mile to give me tips on how to improve the task which allowed me to lead activities for the troop easi

Ryan's leadership skills are unparalleled. He is patient, kind, and always willing to go the extra mile to help us learn and grow. His enthusiasm for scouting is infectious, and he has a remarkable ability to motivate and inspire us to be our best. What I appreciate most about Ryan is his willingness to lead by example. He is always the first to arrive and the last to leave, and he is always willing to get his hands dirty to ensure that our activities run smoothly. For example, when some scouts from our troop were chosen to represent the Singapore Scout Association Marching Contingent for NDP 2022, some of our scout’s foot drills were not up to standard. Ryan stayed back with the scouts almost everyday after school to help perfect their foot drills and to make sure they are ready for the parades. He has taught us the value of hard work, teamwork, and perseverance. Under Ryan's guidance, our troop has accomplished many amazing things. We have completed NDP 2022 and Founder’s Day 2023 which brought our troop to even greater heights.

In short, Ryan is an outstanding senior who has made a positive impact on our lives. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn and grow under his guidance, and I have no doubt that he will continue to inspire and lead others in the years to come.

Now, as part of my Chief Commissioner's Award attainment, I chose Timothy Ong to be my mentee.

A short reflection done by Timothy:

I got to know Ian in sec 2. Back in sec 1, I was in stingray patrol with different sec 2s in charge. I didn’t interact a lot with the other scouts in my batch or my seniors as I was shy and didn’t really feel comfortable in scouts. However, in sec 2, I was transferred to kingfisher patrol. This was when I got to know my new sec 3 seniors which included Ian. As there were fewer sec 2s in the kingfisher patrol, I was forced to be more participative. I got to know the rest of my batch and the sec 3s taught us how to do pioneering, outdoor cooking etc. I initially hated doing all of these but Ian made things fun when teaching me and I ended up learning a lot of new things. For example, during pioneering, Ian was patient with me. At first I had trouble tying some of the knots and lashes but with Ian’s guidance, I managed to get it in the end. He also made sure to keep the meetings fun by cracking jokes to make us laugh and bond more. I finally started feeling more comfortable in scouts and enjoyed attending CCA every week. One important lesson I learnt from Ian was to be a good role model for the juniors. Seeing Ian become the patrol leader and eventually the chairman with his good attitude and manners to everyone, encouraged me to follow his footsteps. I now believe my good attitude to scouting and my kind behavior to those around me has been influenced by Ian. With this attitude I have been able to make many friends and respect everyone around me. Another important lesson I learnt was to not make CCA a chore, but rather make it something you enjoy doing. For example, as stated earlier, I did not enjoy CCA when I first joined. As I grew up, I saw Ian have fun with his batch mates and I felt inspired. I started bonding more with my batch mates and we are now much closer together. If I did not have Ian to guide me as a senior, I might not have been inspired to bond with my batch mates and continued finding CCA boring or annoying to attend. Through the two years I have gotten to know him, I feel Ian was a dedicated scout and would never give up once he put his mind on something. He made it through NDP training with me and a few other scouts, further showing his determination to accomplish anything he attempts. He inspired me to do the same and has made me a better person. I am grateful to Ian for all this and hope he continues to maintain his good mindset and inspires others the way he has inspired me.
