Volunteering With Willing Hearts

I have volunteered with Willing Hearts 3 times . Willing Hearts is a secular,

non-affiliated charity, which is wholly run by volunteers, apart from a handful of

staff. It operates a soup kitchen that prepares, cooks and distributes about

11,000 daily meals to over 70 locations island wide, 365 days a year. Willing

Hearts help beneficiaries which include the elderly, the disabled, low income

families, children from single parent families or otherwise poverty stricken

families, and migrant workers in Singapore.

When I reached Willing Hearts, I was

tasked by the staff to the vegetable cutting station, I grabbed a hairnet and

gloves and joined the cutting station. There, we cut head after head of

cabbage into one inch pieces, and also peeled and cut sweet potatoes.

Although I may not be the best at cutting vegetables or being around in the

kitchen, I tried my best knowing that the effort I put in will help the less

fortunate. I have also volunteered at the Willing Hearts Kitchen. I spent the

first 2 hours in the kitchen scraping metal trays then oiling the trays and then

arranging tuna puffs onto the tray alongside with other volunteers. It felt like I was

in a factory as it very much resembled an assembly line. We had to prepare 500

portions of tuna puffs to be distributed to the needy and I could only imagine the

number of puffs we had to prepare. Secondly, because they were frozen, we had

a hard time separating the puffs and we had to be quick about it as the pastries

would melt if we left them out for too long. Over The next 2 hours, I spent packing

the golden puffs that had just come out of the oven and they looked amazing.

Once that was done, I went back into the kitchen and helped with the cleaning/

washing up of all the equipment used. Overall, volunteering with Willing Hearts

was very meaningful as it was the least that I could contribute back to society.

Volunteering also helped me realise and appreciate humanity and spiritual being

as well as feeling good for making a positive impact on someone's life.
